The Deception

Margo stared silently into the darkness of her bedroom as her thoughts divided themselves between sanity and insanity.  She and Carl had been a couple for over three years.  Yet, though they were still together, she was suddenly uncomfortable and uncertain of his feelings. She hadn’t heard from him all day and they talked every day.  She knew he dated other women because he was upfront about it.  She often lay awake at night wondering what he was doing when he wasn’t with her.

She hated her status as his girlfriend because it gave her no rights.  She couldn’t question him at will about his whereabouts, or expect him to be monogamous. There was no real commitment on his part, and she resented her attachment to him.

She decided marriage to him would give her status and peace.  She would then have the right as his wife to question him and make him accountable to her.  She decided to tell him she was pregnant, though she wasn’t. She was convinced that because he loved children, he would want to do the right thing.  Her plan to deceive him included telling him that she was pregnant, and later claim a miscarriage shortly after they were married.

However, when she called him, she learned he had changed his number.  She called his job and found out he was on vacation.  Frantically, she called his brother and a couple of his friends and couldn’t get an answer as to his whereabouts. Three days later, she learned finally from his Facebook page that he had eloped with an ex-girlfriend to Mexico.
