Struck

Though the music was reminiscent and intoxicating, Katie’s spirit was sullen, as she sat watching the mix of men come through the door of her friend’s birthday party. She resented the need that pushed her to still want to be half of a couple again because she didn’t trust men anymore.

Every guy she’d known had deeply disappointed her. Her last experience had left her devastated when her fiancé` turned out to be a con man, who disappeared with the $5000 she’d given him as her half on a home they plan to purchase.

Suddenly, she felt someone staring at her.  She looked up into the eyes of a man who was standing across the room.  Her heart leaped in her chest.  He was absolutely gorgeous. His eyes were hypnotic as she began to stare unwillingly.  He smiled slightly as if he was confident of what he was doing, and she returned his smile as if drawn by some mysterious force.

He was lean and tall, with ebony skin that glistened in the dim lighting.  He nodded slightly toward the dance floor without taking his eyes off her, and she rose from her chair as if he had reached for her hand.  The soft music embraced her as she walked slowly toward him.   Someone called her name, but she could not stop.  The other figures on the dance floor seemed shadowy, as he stood with his hands in his pockets, waiting for her to reach him. She could hear herself breathing, as she prayed silently that he was as engaging as he was enticing.

Without a word between them, she slid smoothly into his arms as the music propelled them to move accordingly.  His arms were strong, and she relaxed slowly as if destiny had finally placed her where she was intended to be.  By the end of the evening after exchanging laughter,  dialogue, and phone numbers…she decided she would try once again for romance and pray that it would be the real thing this time.
