The Surprise Visit

Gena was sorry she had answered the door when she saw Shawn standing there.  Her friend Shawn had stopped by unexpectedly to visit and Gena was expecting her new boyfriend Nate.  She didn’t want Shawn there and she didn’t know how to get rid of her.  They hadn’t spoken in three months, because of a serious disagreement and now Shawn was coming over to apologize.

It wasn’t that Gena was concerned about being alone with her new boyfriend.  Her problem was that Shawn was beautiful and Gena was convinced that Shawn would distract his attention from her.  She mentioned that her boyfriend was on his way there in hopes that Shawn would leave, but Shawn didn’t budge.

Gena was beside herself.  She had only been dating Nate for two months and she was not sure of how he felt about her, and there had always been a sort of competition between her and Shawn.  While Gena and Shawn sat talking, there was a knock at the door and Gena didn’t move.

“Would you like me to get it?” Shawn asked rising from her seat.  “Sure” Gena said in a low voice.   I might as well get it over with, she thought.  When Shawn opened the door, her mouth dropped open.  Gena walked up behind her.  “Hi, Nate, this is my friend Shawn,” she said.  “Come on in.”  The man stood at the door staring silently at Shawn with a sheepish look on his face.

“He knows me already,” Shawn said quietly, “He’s my boyfriend, too.”  Gena and Shawn both slammed the door in the guy’s face, and embraced each other in friendship and despair.
