14 Ways To Be

Socially Shunned

by Coco Diong

Recently, as I was about to enter “the party of the year” at the home of a prominent attorney, I noticed a commotion at the door. A very tall pretty girl was doing all she could to gain entrance by giving the host a hard time.  She was insistent that her name had to be on the list because she was with “the mayor’s office.” The would-be guest was then told bluntly that it was a private party “for invitation-only guests” and was asked to leave.

Later, I overheard the host tell another guest that the woman had serious personality issues.  After observing that incident, I was moved to write on the dynamics of what makes one socially unacceptable. I took a poll among all my savvy cohorts who consider themselves “experts” who shared some interesting insight into social behavior.   They agreed on these 14 Ways To Be Socially Shunned

  1. “Look critically and carefully at everyone and everything, so you don’t miss nothing, and always voice your negative opinion.”
  2. “Only call others when you need a favor.”
  3. “Make sure everyone knows how important you are through pompous dialogue.”
  4. “In conversation, make it clear that you know everything and been everywhere.”
  5. “Be sure to point out who’s jealous of you every chance you get.”
  6. “Whenever you run into someone, be sure to give a long detailed update on your most recent personal accolades and honors.”
  7. “Be quick to recite your problems and blame others for whatever current predicament you may be in.”
  8. “Point out continuously how you’ve been wronged and taken advantage of.”
  9. “Make sure all of your jokes regarding others are put-downs.”
  10. “Complain about everything.  Be satisfied with nothing.”
  11. “Be intrusive.  Ask a lot of personal questions, and press for an answer.”
  12. “Push to the front.  Do everything you can to be heard, seen, and acknowledged first.”
  13. “Be loyal to no one.  Give everyone equal opportunity to be betrayed, maligned, and exposed.”
  14. “Brag, brag, brag.  Make sure everyone in hearing distance understands how highly regarded you are.”
