Spread the love
Another Chance
To Get It Done

by Bonita Bennett

Here we go again…Another year and still another chance to be happy, content, smarter, attractive, satisfied, slimmer, financially solvent, loved, in love, admired, accepted, healthy, recognized, and respected.  Will it happen?  It could if we work hard enough at it.  These are but a few of the common desires of the human heart that are claimed for attainment with each new year, and these like other goals and aspirations are more easily acquired where the mental equivalent of “elbow grease” is applied.

Unfortunately, too many of us fail in our resolve to improve our status each year, because we are often void of vibrancy and focus on our own objectives.  There are those of us who do better by others than we do for ourselves while allowing frivolous agendas to take precedence over that which could greatly improve our quality of life.

Last year, too many of us ate too much, sat too much, and spoke too often about what we wanted to accomplish, but were not quite able to do so.  I’m proud to say that I have several friends who vowed to make 2021 the best year ever and they worked diligently to do so.  One lost 100 pounds and went from Ms. Slouch Couch Potato to a sought-after glamour puss.  Another gave up weekly gambling sessions at the local casino, and for the first time as an adult opened up a savings account and saved over $10,000.

Me?  Let’s just say I did better in some areas I needed to do better in, like, I finally lost the 10 pounds I’ve been trying to lose.  But most importantly, I discovered another life objectively and I encourage all of you to take some time to consider what your life’s purpose is, and why God got you here.  This exercise requires some serious reflection and a review of your talents or gifts.

Remember, what the mind can conceive, its owner can achieve with a little discipline.  If you wish to be happy, you must understand that happiness is a state of mind that cannot be attained in the dark places we sometimes place ourselves in pursuit of pleasure.    This includes inappropriate relationships and out-of-control behavior.

Contentment as well comes from having an acute understanding of what you are in control of and what you are not.  You do what you can with vigor and rest your limitations in the hands of God.  If you’re not satisfied, get up and do something about it.  Only you can satisfy you.  Satisfaction cannot come from an external source.  We must learn to accept what we can’t change and change what we can.  I find that the “excuse factor” often impedes the progress of so many great minds.

If you wish to be slimmer, follow the natural laws and treat your body better this year.  If you wish to live more prosperously, intellectualize your spending habits.  It is never too late to get it together.  As long as you’re still here, there’s a chance to achieve personal success.

If you want to be loved, give it away…If you want to have peace, forgive and forget.  If you wish to be admired and respected, touch the lives of others through good deeds and good words.  I know a man who gives his children whatever they want, but they resent him because of the way he talks to them.  He’s always putting them down, and he thinks their skin should be thick enough for them to endure his tongue..  After all, his father treated him the same way and he made it.

Hopefully, this will be the year you resolve to carry forth your resolves with energy and fortitude and I’m certain it will be the best year ever, and one you’ll never forget.
