Why Makeup Is The Ultimate Beauty Enhancer

by Gloria Gibson

I have several friends who only apply makeup seriously when it’s a very special occasion like a wedding or something on that order. On normal days, as they call it, they wear a “little foundation” and either plain lip gloss or some lipstick color that is usually unbecoming. These women have what I call “an unpolished look,” because they have not adopted the use of makeup in their beauty routine.  I was shocked when one girl told me she didn’t own a makeup bag or a mascara wand.

Yet, each of these women without exception enjoys dressing in the latest fashion, and vie for the attention of the opposite sex on a regular basis. I have found that the woman who commands attention and turns heads whenever she walks through a room is usually a woman whose makeup is impeccable.  She is no movie star, but she has an indefinable something that makes her seem “beautiful” without necessarily being so.

It could be a lot of things, many of which come with age and/or accomplishment, intelligence, strength, self-assurance or power.  But chances are, at the root of it all, there is an understanding of self that enables this woman to use her physical attributes to her best advantage.  And that’s a beautiful quality that every woman needs to cultivate.

Today with all the products, services, and information available, there is simply no reason for any woman to be unattractive.  Makeup can transform a woman’s looks in a matter of minutes.  It gives every woman’s face a polished look of perfection if it’s applied correctly.

When a woman learns to feel good about herself, she has acquired the greatest beauty asset of all.  A woman should always be aware of the beauty attributes of her face, so she can use makeup to play up her best features and play down her not-so-good ones.

Begin by analyzing your skin type.  Is it normal, oily, or dry?  This is an important consideration for selecting products that will do the best job for you.  Are there any problems that demand special attention?  It would be wise to get a free make-up and skin care class from a professional consultant.

Remember, make-up is designed to enhance your looks, not disguise them.  Unfortunately, so many women use make-up to create a new face. The most beautiful made-up face looks natural.  Makeup of any kind is designed to give one’s face a polished, groomed look, not the painted-on look of a doll.

Foundation is designed to even out skin tones and create a smooth complexion.  Eye make-up is for accentuating and “pumping up” the most exotic features on a woman’s face. Blush is just as its name says.  It is supposed to be used to give the look that one gets when one truly blushes.  When one blushes, the cheeks turn rosy and there is a glow that adds drama to a face.  Blush was not intended to be used to paint big pink or red circles on cheeks.  Applying blush properly seems to be a challenge for most women.

I have discovered that too many women have never learned from a professional how to properly apply makeup.  You can always tell if you have on too much foundation if your neck is obviously a different color than your face.

Many women either use too much blush, or apply it wrong, or put on the wrong eyeshadow for day and evening wear.  Example:  Light blue eyeshadow should never be worn unless you are wearing blue, and it’s Halloween.

In addition, one should never try to cover up skin problems with heavy make-up.  For serious or recurring problems, one should see a dermatologist. Remember, don’t try to wing it.  Your face is your most important feature.  For best results with makeup application, visit a beauty counter at one of the major department stores in your area, and get your face made up by a professional.
