Bad Advice

Sheilar: “A close friend moved out of town and left her gorgeous boyfriend behind. One night, I was feeling particularly lonely and a friend advised me to call him and invite him over for pizza. She assured me that she had seen him admiringly looking at me. When I called, he claimed to be flattered but said he didn’t think it would be appropriate because of his past relationship with my friend. I was so embarrassed. But I felt even worse when I told my brother about it and he said that the guy just didn’t find me attractive. Because a man could care less about what’s appropriate when it comes to being with a woman he’d like to be with.”

Kim: “My boyfriend of five years had not proposed and I was getting tired of waiting.  We lived together and my mother convinced me that in this day and age, there was nothing wrong with me proposing to him.  So, I bought a ring, a gold band, and got down on my knee and asked him to marry me.  He told me he would think about it, because we had a good thing going the way things were, and he didn’t want to mess that up with a formal commitment. He moved out two days later.”

Elena: “After discovering my husband in an indiscreet position with my best friend, my sister advised me to hang on for dear life, because I would lose too much if I divorced him.  (We had much property and a substantial bank account.)  I forgave him and hung on… and nine months later, he moved out, divorced me, and married her.”

Tracey: “I married a guy who admitted before the wedding that he was still in love with another woman.  My father convinced me that my love for him would conquer his unrequited love for another.  It never did and I went through three years of hell trying to sway his feelings toward me.”

Karla: “Two weeks before I was to marry, I met a guy who completely knocked me out of my socks.  There was no question in my mind that it was meant for us to be together and that I could not go through with the wedding.  My mother advised me to tell my fiancé that I changed my mind about marriage because I no longer felt  I was ready.  My sister, on the other hand, badgered me to tell my fiancé the truth.  She convinced me that men, in general, felt better about anything when a woman was truthful with them.  But when I told my fiancé the truth, he hit me in the face with his fist, which required twelve stitches.  I ended up alone, and the object of my affection ended up with my sister.”
