Spread the love
Love For Late Bloomers

by Cheryl Lakes

I personally know a number of women who are over 40 and have never married and are concerned about it. The majority are leading active lives, but still, wish to be married.  For many, when they arrive in the forties and have never married, they would rather be considered divorced, than single.  I ought to know because I was one of them.

Two years ago, I was 40 and had never ever been engaged or in a serious relationship.  I felt rejected, passed over, and discarded.  At that time, I was involved with a guy I had been hoping would ask me to be his wife, but he ended up dumping me and asking someone else.  Instead of becoming discouraged, I decided to pray for my divine mate instead, and a year later, I met a man who far exceeded my imagination.  Three months later, we were married on his friend’s yacht in Hawaii, on my 43rd birthday.

When I decided to write this article, I went in search of women who had found romance after 40 and when they least expected it. Hopefully, their experiences will inspire those who think that when romance has not come at a certain age, love has passed by.  It should also succeed in giving new energy to those who are still waiting for that ultimate love experience.

Gloria – married for the first time at age 45.  She met her husband in the supermarket.  They got to flirting in the vegetable section and bumped into each other again at the checkout counter. He was 53 and a retired Marine captain. She was a schoolteacher, who had given up long before on ever finding love.  Two months later, they were married and shopping together in the same supermarket they met in..

Marcia – was 47 and convinced she’d never marry.  She met her husband in the neighborhood cleaners.  He was the new owner, and they clicked after she complained about the service one day.  He offered to take her to dinner to compensate for the error, and they began dating.  A year later they were married.  He proposed to her on top of the Empire State Building in New York because her favorite movie was “An Affair To Remember.”

Joanie – 52, decided one night to do something she’d never done…..go to a movie alone. She was tired of waiting on girlfriends when she wanted to go out.  In the darkened theater, a man sat two seats from her and began commenting on the various scenes in the movie.  At first, she was apprehensive about talking to strangers, but after a while, she began to enjoy the camaraderie. When the movie ended, he asked if she would join him at the lobby bar for a drink and she accepted the invitation.  He was a 58-year widower who owned several car service franchises. They began dating and married one year later.

Heather – was 56 and a registered nurse who had never married.  She met her Mr. Right at an amusement park.  She was standing in line waiting to go on one of the fastest rides there and he was standing behind her.  The wait was long, so they got to talking and discovered they lived in the same Atlanta suburb. He was a 45-year-old policeman who was recently divorced.  They exchanged numbers and dated on and off for three years. They got married in Jamaica with all their friends in attendance.

Colette – was 50 and had only loved one man in her life, and he had married someone else.  She had been in and out of relationships but had given up on ever being married.  She had lost track of her first love until she ran into a mutual friend and learned that he was divorced and looking for her.  She gave the friend her phone number, and when he called, she knew instantly that he was destined to be her husband. Nine months later, they were married in Greece, which was where she’d always dreamed she would be married one day.
