Mistook

When Sandy first spotted Rob at a party, he was talking to her best friend, Peggy, and her heart fell in defeat.  He was by far, the finest man she’d ever seen, and she was smitten almost immediately.  When Peggy introduced them, she smiled weakly in resignation.

She knew she couldn’t compete with Peggy on any level and she assumed he was interested in Peggy.  After all, Peggy was beautiful, smart, and always the center of male attention.

As Sandy moved around the room, one of Peggy’s former boyfriends tapped her on the shoulder and asked her to dance.  With a soft chuckle, she nodded her acceptance without even looking at him.  It seemed she was destined to stand in from time to time for Peggy when her “discards” as Sandy called them, couldn’t get Peggy’s attention.

When the guy began to flirt with her, Sandy almost laughed out loud.  When he asked if he could give her a lift home, Sandy pretended she couldn’t hear over the loud music and walked over to the bar.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, Rob was standing next to her, asking if he could have the next dance.  He winked at her and she winked back.  Her heart fluttered when they began to dance, she saw the way he looked at her.  By the end of the evening, she learned he was asking Peggy about her when she saw them talking.  He ended up giving her a lift home. Seven months later, they were engaged to be married.
