The Dating Chronicles
The Message
Lisa knew her co-worker David liked her and it was her plan to use this to her advantage. David was not her ideal, nor did he appeal to her, but he was the close friend of a guy who did. Her boss, Mark. Lisa had been admiring his friend Mark for months now, but he seemed unaware of her admiring glances or gestures.
Now David, who was a part of a very elite circle, was inviting her to accompany him to Mark’s birthday party as his date and she couldn’t wait for the opportunity to be close to the man she daydreamed about nightly.
At the party, the room was noisy and filled with familiar prominent faces, as Lisa maneuvered to find a spot where she could observe Mark inconspicuously. She pretended to feel suddenly faint, so David wouldn’t ask her to dance. She was there strictly to observe Mark and somehow attract his attention. As David made his social rounds at the party, Lisa sat in a corner watching as Mark danced with an unattractive woman who was expensively attired.
Lisa sat and stared at him as he moved about the party unaware of her. As she watched him, she wished she could ask him to dance, but she knew that was not an option. As she contemplated her next move she recalled the chastising she’d gotten earlier from her friend Ellie. “I think you’re silly to ignore a nice guy like David for a jerk like Mark, who is so stuck on himself.”
Lisa smiled, as she thought of Mark’s justification for conceit. After all, he was without question, the best looking guy in the room. She had been looking at him for so long, that she could almost count the number of freckles on his face.
Then it happened…and it was so quick, she almost missed it. He was looking her way. It seemed he had finally caught her stare, and she winked at him. But instead of acknowledging the act, he frowned, shut his eyes tight, and turned away quickly. She was hurt…..but she got the message. Somehow, her admiration had been discovered. She felt exposed and wobbly as she got up to search for David. But David was nowhere to be found. Later, she learned that he had left the party with an ex-girlfriend.
