How Good Is Your Name?

by Bonita Bennett

I have a psychologist friend who uses the school grading system to reference the character and likeability of people she knows. She feels that A’s are rare, and B’s are climbing, but that the average person is a C and content with it. She contends that most folks ain’t trying to leave a notable mark on the world as it relates to making a lasting or favorable impression.

Sometimes, I wonder if she’s right. In these times, having a good name or reputation doesn’t seem to have the priority it held in my parents’ generation. Recently,  I was intrigued when a friend mentioned she’d met a tall, handsome lawyer at a party.  However, when she mentioned his name, I shifted from intrigued to disappointed, because he had a bad reputation.

I‘ve witnessed the value of having good attached to your name and the penalties that life sometimes imposes when good can’t be found with a flashlight.

I once tried to introduce a lonesome gorgeous friend to a handsome business associate, and she was excited and looking forward to the introduction. That is, until I mentioned his name. Her grin was instantly replaced with a frown, as she described a horrible date encounter with him that she would never forget. Later, she learned at an investment club meeting that she had not been his only victim.

Unfortunately, this guy probably has no idea that he has developed such an unsavory reputation because most people seldom consider the smallness of the world we live in, and/or the arrows or stars that are automatically attached to our names based on our words and actions.
