Misconceptions

When Sandy first spotted her neighbor Rob at her friend Peggy’s Moving Day party, he was laughing and talking to Peggy, and her heart fell in defeat.  He was by far, the finest guy in the room, and she was smitten almost immediately.  When they made eye contact, she smiled weakly in her usual resignation.

She had asked Peggy to invite him in hope of meeting him, but she knew from past experience that she couldn’t compete with Peggy on any level.  Peggy was beautiful, smart and was always the center of male attention.

As Sandy moved to go to another corner of the house to help pack up Peggy’s things,, one of Peggy’s former boyfriends tapped her on the shoulder and asked her to assist him in untangling some string.  With a soft chuckle, she listened politely as he began to flirt.  It seemed she was destined to stand in from time to time for Peggy when her “discards” as Sandy called them, couldn’t keep Peggy’s attention.

When Peggy’s ex whispered in her ear and told her that he had always been interested in her, she excused herself and moved to another room in search of Peggy.  She wasn’t about to indulge his nonsense. She knew how badly he had taken it when Peggy dumped him for a new love.  She was amazed at how Peggy was always able to make friends out of ex-boyfriends.  As she looked around, she saw at least two other exes joining in the work.

Suddenly, Rob was standing next to her introducing himself.  He winked at her and she winked back.  When he smiled at her, she could see the admiration in his eyes.  By the end of the evening, she learned he was asking Peggy about her when she saw them talking.  He ended up giving her a lift home.  Three months later they were dating heavily. Seven months later,  they were engaged to be married.
