Surprises

SUSAN: “My boyfriend, who had suddenly ended our relationship without explanation two months before, called me on the morning of Valentine’s Day. He asked me to have dinner with him that evening, as if we had never stopped talking. I had been crying the blues the night before and had spent the entire evening on the phone being comforted by girlfriends. I had heard rumors that he was reunited with an ex-girlfriend. However, I was transformed with joy when I got his call. Later that evening, I was made even happier when at dinner he informed me for the first time that he loved me and that he wanted to spend the rest of his life proving it to me. He gave me a beautiful promise ring, which he replaced a year later with an engagement ring.”
NORA: “It was Valentine’s Day and I had been feeling sorry for myself all morning as I slowly dressed for work. It was the third Valentine’s Day in a row that I didn’t have anyone special to share the day with. However, when I got to work that morning, there was a small box of candy sitting on my desk from a co-worker I’d been secretly admiring. I had been trying to get the nerve up for months to flirt with him, but I couldn’t muster up the courage. I was shocked. When I went down to his office to thank him for the candy, he invited me out to lunch, and after lunch, he invited me out to dinner after work. Needless to say, it was the most wonderful day, and wonderful evening. We are still dating.”
BARBARA: “My boyfriend was in Seattle, Washington, on a week long business conference and we had talked on the phone the day before Valentine’s Day. He had mentioned his regrets about not being able to spend our first Valentine’s Day together, but he promised to make up for it when he returned later on in the week. On the evening of Valentine’s Day, I was shocked when he showed up at my door with a box of long stemmed red roses and a huge box of candy. He had flown in that morning just to surprise me and he flew back to Seattle the next morning.”
MARGIE: “My boyfriend gave me a box of candy on Valentine’s Day with an engagement ring wrapped in candy paper inside the box, after telling me the night before that he wasn’t the marrying kind when we were arguing about the definition of a long term commitment.’
CATHERINE: “Last year, I was invited to a friend’s birthday party on Valentine’s Day and I didn’t want to go because I didn’t have a date, but I ended up going alone. I envisioned it to be a place filled with couples, however, I was wrong. In the midst of having a wonderful time, I struck up a conversation with a gorgeous guy who had just moved to New York from London. He knew no one and was there trying to meet new people. He had the poise of an African prince with a British accent. We ended up spending the evening together, and at the end of the night when we exchanged phone numbers, he pulled out a small box of Valentine candy and gave it to me. He explained that he’d brought it to give away if he met someone special.”
STEPHANIE: “My fiancé and I had a big fight over something stupid and we hadn’t talked in two weeks. When Valentine’s Day came, I was really missing him and had made up my mind to call him when I got home from work. It was snowing heavily outside when I came out of the door moving quickly to find my car. The snow was blinding and I could barely see as I hurried along. As I approached my car, I saw a man leaning on it with a bunch of flowers in his hand. At first I was puzzled because I couldn’t tell who it was, but when I recognized my boyfriend, my heart leaped with joy.”
