When Women Turn Violent
by Lisa Laird
According to the Bureau Of Justice Statistics, the rate of intimate partner victimizations for females is 4.3 victimizations per 1,000 females age 12 or older. The equivalent rate of intimate partner violence against males was 0.8 victimizations per 1,000 males age 12 or older. Here are some personal accounts of women becoming violent in relationships.
Kiley: “My brother had a girlfriend whom everyone else could tell had a serious jealous streak, but he couldn’t see it. One night, she followed him after he finished bowling, and shot him in the shoulder, when he dropped off a fellow female bowler. He survived, but the relationship didn’t, and she ended up doing five years in prison for attempted murder.”
Bria: “My cousin has been stabbed twice by the same girlfriend and he’s still with her. He’s had her arrested four times and they still always end up back together. She’s in jail right now for pulling a gun on him at a neighborhood block party, because she saw him talking to another woman. This time, he refused to bail her out.”
Tony: “I went out on two dates with a woman and after I discovered that we had less in common than I thought, I backed away. However, she kept calling with various creative tactics to get me to go out with her again. When I didn’t bite, she slit all four tires on my car and smashed my windshield. Ironically, when I went to the auto glass place, there were several guys waiting for windshield repair caused by disgruntled women.”
Rob: “I went out on a first date with a woman, who was beautiful, intelligent and classy…or so I thought. I took her to my boss’s birthday party, and she got drunk and cursed my boss’ wife when she suggested kindly, that she’d had too much to drink. On the way home, she became belligerent, when she tried to apologize for her behavior, and I didn’t respond. She kicked me repeatedly when I pulled out of the car after she refused to get out. I ended up throwing her on the ground and driving off. It was an experience I won’t soon forget.”
Mike: “Two years ago, I had an ex-girlfriend, who didn’t take our breakup well, show up at my door unannounced. When I opened the door thinking it was a pizza delivery, there she stood with a gun in her hand. Unfortunately, my new girlfriend was there, and she shot both of us and ran out the door. The fortunate thing was that our wounds weren’t life-threatening. She was later arrested, and is still in jail.”
Deanna: “Sometimes a woman can be driven to violence. My fiancé canceled our wedding three weeks before it was scheduled to happen because he claimed he had just learned that he had a terminal illness, and he didn’t want to begin a marriage being sick. He said he was moving to another city to be closer to his family, and he wanted me to move on with my life without him. I was heartbroken, but I tried to understand until I found out a month later that he was not terminally ill and had actually moved out of state and married another woman he’d met three months before. I was so angry that I bought a gun and was about to drive over a thousand miles to shoot him when my sister talked me out of it. I’m glad she did because he wouldn’t have been worth going to jail.”
Jason: “It has become scary out here on the dating scene. You just don’t know who you’re with. I’ve had at least three women go ballistic and threaten me bodily harm after I tried to move away from them. One ex-girlfriend waited for me to get off from work one day, showed me a gun in her purse, and told me that if she ever caught me with another woman, she would make me into a eunuch.”
