The Street Guide To Finding
Summer Romance:
An Investigative Report
by Alexis Ainsley
Summer is almost here and romance could be on the horizon for you if you’re not already hooked up. Two years ago, I read a magazine article on “The Summer Guide To Finding The One, and it listed the following places or activities for all those bold enough to venture out in search of the “dream connection.” Since I had yet to make that hook-up and was determined not to spend another summer alone, I decided to try them all, and here are my results.
Jogging/Walking – I wore out two pairs of high-priced Nikes trying to be noticed while out walking, and not one guy stopped or smiled in my direction. On the jogger’s trail, everyone goes by in a blur. Either, I wasn’t as hot as I hoped to be, or the guys out there were just serious about getting in shape. I didn’t have any luck, but I did lose ten pounds in the process.
Roller Skating – No luck. Here, I fell so many times at the skating rink that the manager asked if I were on medication. This place does not afford one the opportunity to look your best unless you’re a good skater. Here, no one met my standards. But I loved the music, and I loved watching those with skill glide around the floor. One good-looking brother touched my shoulder when they announced the couples skate one night, and I blushed in anticipation. But it turned out, he just wanted to get past me to ask another girl to skate.
Throw A “Bring A Friend Party” – I went to several of these. Here is where everyone invited brings someone of the opposite sex who is only a friend. This would have worked well, but I was unusually late getting there, and by the time I arrived all of the truly interesting men seemed already attached to the people who were on time.

Night Classes – I enrolled in an “Auto Awareness” class, so I could kill two birds with one stone – learn more about the inner workings of my car and snag a honey man at the same time. But it didn’t work. I met a bunch of nice guys, but no one seemed interested in dining at places other than Hattie’s Fish Joint or Ted’s Hot Dog Stand. The man of my dreams had to at least enjoy the pleasure of eating on a tablecloth.
Health Clubs – Men Men everywhere. All over the place. However, my type was obviously not into bodybuilding. I did end up with muscles I never had before. Plus, no one offered me anything more than help on how to operate the weight machines.
Join A Political Group – I didn’t fare well here because I found the hours to be too long and demanding for volunteer work, and most of the guys I met who could qualify, were too busy trying to catch the tail of someone else’s star to “shine” brightly somewhere else.
Sports Events – Men, men everywhere, but I got too excited and too involved in the games to remain attractive or feminine in this setting. I shouted and whistled so loud; no one came within five feet of me. I discovered that my “fan” behavior is perhaps a little too wild to attract male attention in this crowd.
The Supermarket – At last! This was my last resort and here is where I met with success. After shopping for much-needed groceries, I took a seat in one of those lovely cafes in my local supermarket to have a sandwich after an exhausting day at work, and for a change, I was not entertaining the thought of meeting anyone. I hadn’t been sitting long when the finest brother in the state of Georgia who was sitting at a nearby table, asked me about the store’s closing time. “Do I look like I work here,” I replied with a playful grin and one witty word led to another. He ended up moving over to my table where we ended up discussing the contents in his cart, which contained several fine wines and various cheeses He asked for my number and called later that evening. The following weekend we went out for hotdogs and champagne, at a quaint place out in the countryside and we’ve been dating ever since.
My Findings: Therefore, I conclude that if you’re looking for love for the summer, don’t stay home or spend endless hours in front of the computer seeking a match. Try some of the above activities, and see where you land and with whom.
