Beauty Essential

The Matter Of

Your Mouth

by Gloria Gibson

I was excited as I drove my car wildly through every stoplight that threatened to hamper my way.  I was rushing to meet a blind date (a co-worker’s brother) who was described as fine, funny, and accomplished.  I had seen his photo and I was impressed.  As I drove along, I imagined that we would like each other immediately and that I’d possibly end up with a date for the weekend.  But I was so disappointed when I met him.

He was tall and fine…but when he opened his mouth to speak, I was completely distracted by the condition of his teeth!  They were crooked, broken, and discolored, and he seemed oblivious to the fact.  His expensive suit was totally diminished by his mouth.

Unfortunately, his teeth were such a turn-off, that I made my phone ring and pretended I had an emergency after fifteen minutes of dialogue and excused myself.  As I drove away, I was deeply disappointed and surprised that a man of his ilk could be sporting the smile of a derelict.

The next day, I shared my experience with some friends at the health club, and we got into an interesting discussion on how there are many who don’t view their teeth as a major part of their physical presentation.  I used to work with a woman, whose beauty was striking until she opened her mouth.  Furthermore, she wore bright red lipstick which served to illuminate her face and drew unfavorable attention to her damaged teeth.

Through many discussions, I learned that a great number of people are not aware of cosmetic dentistry and its far-reaching benefits to achieving a beautiful smile, a healthy-looking mouth, and a hygienic appearance.  There are many options for exploring the benefits of cosmetic dentistry…some of which include…

Bleaching – a procedure that can whiten yellow or discolored teeth.

Gum Sculpting – a reshaping of the gums to correct a receding gum line.

Veneers – are thin porcelain or resin laminates affixed to worn teeth.

Crowns – are “caps” fitted over broken or severely damaged teeth.

Tooth-colored fillings – which replace unsightly metal fillings with tooth-like materials.  The options for obtaining a beautiful smile are endless.
