The Dating Chronicles
The Scheme
Gwen had been involved with Bob over five years and he was still no closer to asking her to marry him than he was when they met. She felt that Bob loved her, but he was unwilling to make a commitment to marriage. She knew she had to do something to stimulate him or she would never become his wife.
After weeks of careful planning, she decided to leave town on his birthday for a week to give him some space and time to miss her. She couldn’t afford the trip, but it was worth the sacrifice for the goal she had in mind.
The night before she left, she was quiet and aloof at the birthday party he gave every year. She made no mention of her plans and avoided all inquiries from him regarding her somber state. Her behavior was intended to set the stage for her planned hiatus.
The next morning, she took a flight to New York and she didn’t call him until the second day of the trip. He was livid because he hadn’t been able to locate her, and found it inconsiderate that she would suddenly disappear without a word.
Through his frantic ravings, she explained softly that she needed to get away and work through some issues. She refused to tell him of her whereabouts and quickly hung up after telling him she didn’t know how long she’d be gone. She didn’t mention her concern for their relationship.
As she stared out of the hotel window, she felt miserable and all alone, but she knew that if she could find the power to stay, it would be worth it in the end.
On the fourth day, she phoned him again and he was still angry. He begged her to come home and let him help her with whatever was bothering her. He assured her that between the two of them, he was certain they could work it out since he was now ready for them to get married.
Wild with excitement, Gwen flew home the next day, but when Bob met her at the airport he announced he had been having second thoughts and he needed more time to think, because marriage was a big step. Gwen left him at the airport and decided this time it was for good.
