Stand-Outs

Carl:  “I told my girlfriend for the first time I loved her, and before I finished getting the words out of my mouth, I felt like an idiot.  She just stared at me without saying a word.  Just as I began to feel awkwardly exposed and couldn’t take the silence any longer, she smiled and told me she was glad to know our feelings were in sync.  It wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but it was better than nothing. A year later she asked me to marry her, but still didn’t say the words, ‘I love you.’

David: “You never know where you gonna meet that special someone.  We met at the gas pump.  I noticed her car before I noticed her.  She was driving a new Benz, and she stepped out of it like a princess getting out of a horse-drawn chariot.  I asked if she needed my help to pump her gas, and she said yes. We got to talking and blocking the pumps and eventually ended up spending the rest of the day together.  I don’t even remember what my plans were that day, but they were definitely put on the back burner after that encounter.  That was two years ago and we are now making plans to marry.”

Lorna – “I was out on a blind date with a guy, who was polite and hard to read. I couldn’t tell if he was interested or not because he kept the conversation light and friendly.  When he got up and went to the men’s room, and was gone awhile, I decided to go as well.  When I came out and passed the door, I heard him on his phone describing me as ‘frumpy, dumpy, and dull.’  I kept walking straight out the restaurant door and I got great satisfaction out of picturing him coming back to an empty table.  As I walked to my car, I pacified my hurt feelings with the memory of a wonderful meal.”

Meryl – “Last month, I went out with a guy for the first time and after dinner, he suddenly grew quiet and then asked me to pay half the check without any explanation. I was stunned, but I paid it without question.  I didn’t understand his request, but I was too intimidated to ask why.  As we rode home, he broke the silence by informing me that I had ordered too much food and therefore had gone over his budget.  He accused me of ordering the most expensive dessert on the menu.   I never went out with him again, but that incident changed me as a person.  Never again will I be afraid to express my discomfort or agree to do something I don’t want to do.”
