First Impressions

This was their first date, and Anna was trying her best to like Hank.  She had almost given up on men altogether after the last two guys she’d gone out with.  One had promised to call to take her to a ball game the next day and never showed up.  The other had pulled off before she got to her door when he brought her home.  She had gotten so paranoid after those experiences, that when she met Hank, she had low expectations.

From the beginning, she had not been impressed after he got in the car first and left her standing in the cold, while he reached over and unlocked her door.  Later, she was embarrassed when they entered the restaurant, and he took a seat without waiting to be seated.  However, he was attractive and easy to talk to, and though he seemed awkward and cumbersome, he behaved like a gentleman.

When the waiter brought the check before he was finished eating, he accused him of being racist and refused to leave a tip, which caused her to squirm in her seat.  When she looked across the table and noticed that his hands were ashy, (one of her peeves) she sighed in deep despair.  As she leaned back in the chair, she wondered if her Prince Charming was still out there.  She was beginning to doubt that he was.

She closed her eyes and was trying to envision herself with someone more dashing when he touched her hand.  When she opened her eyes, she saw a look of admiration in his eyes that she had never seen in the eyes of a man looking at her.  When he stood and wrapped his jacket around her shoulders because she was shivering from the frosty air conditioning, she smiled and decided that he was worth investing in.  She reached in her purse for some hand cream and began softly massaging his hands.   She decided that perhaps she could train him to be the man she needed him to be.
