8 Ways To Destroy

The First Date

by Lisa Cregier

When I was out on a first date recently with a real cutie, I knew I had blown it when I broke one of my own cardinal rules. I gave him a lengthy summary of my troubled dating history. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when he never called again. First dates can be nerve-wracking for many obvious reasons. Keep these tips in mind on your next first date with a new interest.

  • Your conversation plays a large role in influencing the “return” factor.  If you’re gorgeous but dull, your phone will most likely ring for one reason only. And you don’t have to be an Einstein to be clever. Clever people enjoy using their minds and engaging others in interesting dialogue.
  • Read the signs well.  I don’t care if you’ve been looking forward to this date all week or you wore your best outfit, don’t try to prolong the evening when it’s obvious the other person has moved on mentally and is ready to call it a night.
  • Don’t do anything you really don’t want to do.  Don’t give your life or romance history on the first date.  It could come off like it’s been a long time since you had somebody to talk to.
  • Relax and be yourself.  Don’t pretend to be the person you think this person would like.  Those who depict their true selves have a higher success rate with the opposite sex, than those who don’t.
  • Be sure to listen well to your date’s conversation and pay close attention to what’s said.  Don’t spend time selling yourself.  The person will either like you or won’t.
  • Do not name drop, unless you have a spotless reputation.  Never connect yourself to people who might not give you a good reference, in an effort to impress him/her with your pedigree.  If you must, be sure to mention the names of people who you know will speak well of you.
  • Don’t give your life or romance history on the first date.  It could come off like it’s been a long time since you had somebody to talk to.
  • Try not to make negative comments.  Remember, words have a longer life than you could imagine, and they can make or break a first impression of you.
