The Theory

In her mind, Mindy had done all she could to get her co-worker Ben’s attention, but nothing had worked. Heretofore, she had always been adept at mixing subtlety with flirting and getting good results. She felt it was not a woman’s place to be the aggressor on the “love field” but certainly she could pave the way by letting a guy know through certain innuendo that she was interested.

Day after day, she watched him as he huddled busily over mounds of paper on his desk, in apparent oblivion to her veiled appeals for some sign of interest. Once a week, she’d bring lunch to his door, and he’d smile with a pleasant thank you, and not say another word.

When she voiced frustration to her best friend Gayle, she was urged to stop hinting around and come out with a true expression of how she felt about him. So, she made up her mind to invite him to her home for dinner when she got back to work on Monday and she spent the whole weekend rehearsing her speech.

However, when she got to work on Monday, she learned that Ben had eloped over the weekend with one of the secretaries on another floor, and she was convinced that she had blown her chance by waiting too long to express her feelings to him.
