The Proposal

A week before her wedding, Lisa ran into Chuck, her fiancé, walking arm in arm with an ex-girlfriend, who had long been a nemesis and a thorn in her side.   She almost fainted on the spot.  They were dressed in formal attire, hugged up, and enjoying the laugh of lovers when she walked upon them face to face leaving a popular concert.

Lisa was stunned but quickly regained her composure and without saying a word handed Chuck his engagement ring and kept walking.    

An hour later, Chuck was at Lisa’s door demanding to be let in.  She refused, so he pushed an envelope containing a note and the engagement ring under her door and left.  The note read, “I’m sorry for what happened, Lisa.  Please forgive me!  It’s just that I happen to be in love with two women, but I only want to marry one.  You!”

Lisa read the note and later burned it along with some clothes he’d left at her apartment.  The next morning, after sitting up all night crying and pondering her next move, she made her decision.  She considered how long she’d been fighting to win Chuck’s heart and how she’d thought she’d won when he finally proposed marriage, but she realized she was mistaken. 

As she picked up the phone to call Chuck to announce her decision, she slipped her engagement back on her finger.  She’d come to the conclusion that she had fought too long and hard for this relationship to give up now.   After all, he had CHOSEN her!  His confession only meant that she had to accept the fact going in that his ex would be the mistress, but Lisa would have all the rights and privileges of being THE WIFE!  She smiled in triumph as the phone rang in her ear.   When he answered, she could hear the excitement in his voice, but she could also hear the voice of his ex in the background.  She hung up the phone.  She changed her mind…but decided to keep the ring.
