The Strategy

Hank was accustomed to the attention he usually got from women.  He was a handsome doctor who had a thing for beautiful women, but he had always found it difficult to meet one who was smart and beautiful.  However, lately, he noticed one of the nurses at the hospital staring at him, who was not his type, and he was surprised at his reaction. He found her stare disconcerting because it held no expression.

Her name was Kim, and he became far more curious about her than he intended. She didn’t possess dazzling looks, but there was something about her that intrigued him and he didn’t know why.

He reasoned that it was because she stared at him all the time without saying a word and only spoke to him regarding patient care.

One day, as he walked towards the doctor’s lounge, he found himself looking for her.  Before that day, he had tried to avoid her stare, but that morning he found himself anticipating it as he neared the nurses’ station.

But when he passed her, she was looking in the opposite direction and he felt a surge of disappointment. Then suddenly, she called his name and he stopped as if struck by lightning.  He turned and met her eyes, which he suddenly saw as beautiful.

“Are you busy tonight Doctor?” she asked as if they were old friends. “If not,” she rushed on without giving him a chance to answer, “I’d like to treat you to an after-work snack. I need your help on a project that I hear you’re good at.”

Without blinking, he mentally erased his plan to visit his sick brother and nodded yes.  He felt tingly inside and she smiled in triumph.  Her plan had worked.  She had set out to intrigue him with stony silence, and a flirtatious wordless stare.  And she knew she had won when he accepted her invitation without hesitation.

The snack evolved into dinner, and soon they began dating.  Eight months later, he presented her with an engagement ring.
