The Dating Chronicles

The Move

Dana knew Hank Hollis’ routine.  He showed up every morning at exactly the same time, walked past her station, and headed for the doctor’s lounge.  She had been watching him now for over four months with disguised glances.  But he seemed oblivious to all around him. She knew he was dedicated to his work, but she also felt that any man could be distracted with the proper motivation. The very handsome Dr. Hollis was her kind of man.  All who greeted him felt beautiful from his flashing smile and that penetrating eye gaze that made you feel special. She decided it was time to make her move.

Dana recalled how she melted the first time he spoke to her, and how she’d been enchanted ever since.  She knew that physically she wasn’t his type.  She figured him as the kind of man who preferred beautiful women with luxurious hair and voluptuous bodies.  But Dana had something she knew could cut through the whole physical thing.  She had confidence, a magical voice, magnetic eye contact, and an alluring smile that had been ensnaring “unwilling” suitors for a while.

It was perplexing to onlookers who watched in awe as Dana often ended up with the best-looking guy in the crowd.  From all appearances, she was average, both mentally and physically.  However, Dana had high self-esteem and felt that nothing was unattainable to her if she wanted it and she wanted Dr. Hank Hollis with a passion.

Hank’s weakness had always been beautiful women.  But he had never found one whose brainpower matched her looks.  However, lately, he had noticed one of the surgical nurses staring at him with subtle looks of interest and he was surprised at his reaction to her. She was obviously bright, but by no means his type. But something about her intrigued him often as he drove home from the hospital at night.

As he walked toward the doctors’ lounge, he found himself looking for her.  Until that day, he had tried to avoid her stare, but this morning he found himself seeking it as he neared the nurses’ station.   But when he passed, she was looking in an opposite direction and he felt disappointed.  Suddenly, she turned and called his name and he stopped as if struck by lightning.  He turned and met her eyes as they alone beckoned him to come back.

She had decided to be bold.  “Are you busy tonight Doctor?” she asked as if they were old friends.  “If not,” she rushed on without giving him a chance to answer, “I’d like to treat you to an after-work snack.  I need your advice on something.”

Without blinking, Hank surprised himself when he erased his plan mentally to visit his brother in the hospital, and nodded a slow “sure.” When she touched his arm to thank him, he felt tingly inside and she smiled in triumph.  She knew her voice was like a mermaid’s siren and it had yet to fail her when she saw something she wanted.
