What If

You Ruled

The World?

by Bonita Bennett

Do you ever think about what you would do if you had the power to zap change in your world?  I certainly have.  Here is my current list…

The Marriage Rule:  If I had my way, lie detector tests and background checks would be mandatory for all those applying for a marriage license.  I’ve heard more horror stories regarding marital mishaps where deception was a part of the wedding drama.  One woman married an ex-convict, who failed to mention his background when they met.  He pretended to be a “successful lawyer,” who tried to strangle her on their honeymoon.  In another incident, a new groom found out three months after the marriage that his bride was still married to someone else, who happened to be in prison.  When one groom learned three months after the marriage that his bride had ovarian cancer, he moved out, stating he couldn’t take care of  “someone who was sick.”  Later, she discovered he had a secret gay lover.

A Bugle Call:  Unity, self-awareness, high self esteem and racial pride would become fashionable again among African Americans, so we can stop killing each other. The new catch phrase would be “Black Is Binding.”

Instant Insight:  I would have it so we could read each other’s minds with the ability to switch it on and off at will.   It would take the guesswork out of life, and take this whole “reality craze” to another level.  The downside would be that unemployment would probably reach unfathomable heights, and relationships of any kind would go down the drain in an instant.

Jealousy=Jail:  All women who threatened to do bodily harm to another woman over a guy would be arrested and forced to sit in jail overnight.  Additionally, any two women caught fighting over a guy would be arrested and forced to spend at least 10 days in a lockup.  This point is being passionately stated because of a recent incident I witnessed.  A friend and I were in a mall parking lot, when a woman suddenly approached her from behind and suddenly shoved her roughly onto a parked car.  The woman began screaming threats at her about what she would do if she didn’t leave her man alone.  When security arrived, the woman ran to her car and sped off.  We were too stunned to move, and to this day, my friend has no idea who the woman was, or the man she referred to because she’s not dating anyone. It was obviously a case of mistaken identity.  Scary isn’t it?  This could happen to anyone at anytime…anywhere.

A Call To Arms:  All gang-bangers in the major cities would be rounded up regularly and forced to watch and listen to a documentary on hate groups, such as, The Ku Klux Klan or the Aryan Nation, at one of their meetings.  The purpose would be to give them some real perspective on the lunacy of hate, and why they must stop hating and killing each other.

A Con Code:  When con men are caught, who prey on lonely women, they would have a big C branded on their necks with a branding iron, to help warn future victims.  One friend gave a “fiancé” $3000.00 to help pay for a “honeymoon cruise” and never heard from him again.  While a reader gave her new “husband” $12,000 of her savings to invest in an out of state business, and found out he had three wives in three different states.

Manners Matter:  I would insist that a charm school course for girls would be mandatory curriculum for all elementary and high school students and a ROTC course would be mandatory for boys.

This will do for now…but I’m still thinking.  What about you?  What would you do?
