Confessions: The Secrets We Carry…

by Lisa Cregier

At a recent weekend college reunion, while playing a game of Confession Bingo, my ex-roommate confessed after four glasses of champagne, that she had slept with my husband (who’s now my ex-husband) while we were dating in college.  I was so stunned, I was utterly speechless.

She was the last person I’d ever suspect of doing such a thing.  She had been my best friend, my confidante…my girl. For the remainder of the weekend, I avoided her, and I couldn’t wait to get as far from her as possible.  Later, she wrote me a letter of apology saying that she felt better getting it off her chest. I wonder…is confession really good for the soul? If so, whose soul benefits?

My Own Confession:  I once suspected a boyfriend of cheating, and I pretended to leave his apartment while he was getting dressed for work, and hid in his hall closet instead.  When he left, I searched his place from top to bottom for evidence of other women, and I found plenty.  I never spoke to him again and I never told him why.  Of course, after that night of college confessions, I decided to interview others about their past acts of “craziness” and I heard some interesting stories.  I found some were glad to finally get “it” off their chests as long as anonymity prevailed. Here are a few examples of “soul purging” that all seem to be glad to release.

Sandy – 30 – “When a real handsome brother from the skating rink asked me out to dinner, I didn’t have anything to wear or money to buy a new dress.  I went downtown to a fine department store and shoplifted a $400.00 dress and shoes to match.  The sad thing is that the guy never showed up after I went to all that trouble.  When I ran into him again, he gave the excuse that something had come up and that he had lost my number. He also didn’t follow up with another request for a date. ”

Tanya – 36 – “I slept with by best friend’s boyfriend while she was in the hospital having his baby.  I had always been curious about him, and it was the first time I was near him, and she wasn’t around.  After that, I moved away from her quietly without explanation.  The guilt was too great.”

Randy – 41 – “When I was much younger, I stole $800.00 from a very abusive aunt, and gave it to my girlfriend, whose family was about to be evicted onto the streets.  Her father had been laid off and her mom was very ill.  My aunt, who had plenty of money, blamed it on a visiting ex-convict nephew from out of town and I let him take the blame for it.”

Sharla – 28 – “My boss had a wife and a mistress, and the wife was very mean and very snooty.  She would walk into the office with her nose in the air, and talk down to everyone present.  So one day, when I was cleaning out the boss’s cabinet, I found some very indiscreet photos of him and his mistress, took a couple and mailed them anonymously to his wife.  A week later, she moved out and a year later, he married the mistress.”

Karen – 40 – “When I was in my twenties, I went out on a date once with a guy, and after dinner, he took me to a party that turned out to be an orgy, and I got so drunk and ended up sleeping with five guys in one night.”

Nakia – 42 – “My best friend’s boyfriend raped me after giving me a lift home one night and threatened to kill me if I told anyone.  I knew he was afraid of snakes, so I put one on the front seat of his car, and when he got in and saw it, he had a heart attack.  Unfortunately, he didn’t die.”

How about you? Do you have one? If so…purge it!
