It was their first date on a snowy night when John asked Gwen to meet him for drinks at his favorite bar.  He arrived first, and took a seat at the bar.  As he sat watching the door for Gwen to walk through it, a tall slim woman in red sat down next to him and they struck up a conversation. When Gwen arrived, John greeted her warmly, but continued to engage the other woman in conversation, as he sat between the two women.

Gwen viewed it as simply social interaction at the bar, which is common when someone is sitting next to you.  She was excited about the evening and anxious to get to know John better.  Though John was talking more to the other woman, she didn’t even notice when the woman left, nor did she make note of the fact that John and the woman had begun whispering to each other.

Ten minutes later, after making small getting-to–know-you chit-chat with Gwen, John suddenly excused himself to go to the men’s room and never returned.  Gwen sat there thirty minutes before the bartender informed her that John had left out a side door with the woman in red.  After that incident, she swore off men for a month.
