The Sighting

Nate was sitting alone when they came in. There were three of them, and Nate watched as they squeezed into a nearby booth, and smiled at him.  They were attractive and animated as they buzzed in girlish chatter, but his eyes were fixed on the one whose smile radiated across the room.

He wondered if she was married, and how he could meet her. He knew he couldn’t approach the table and choose her out of the group, without ruffling the egos of the other women.  So he stared for a while, finished his dinner, and got up to leave, resigning himself to a missed opportunity.  If it’s meant to be, I’ll see her again, he thought.

When he passed the table, he was surprised to see her staring at him. He winked at her and smiled. “Sir,” she called out as he headed toward the door, “could I see you for a moment.  I’d like to ask you a question?”  As she rose to leave the booth, Nate’s stomach fluttered wildly as he smiled in anticipation. She was even prettier up close.

“Would you please buy a raffle ticket for my sorority’s charity?” she asked with her dark eyes twinkling.  “They’re only $10.00 each and you look like a rich man!” He laughed. He liked pretty women with wit. He replied, “I’ll take two if you give me your name and number.”

She chuckled as she breathed a sigh of relief.  She had seen him when she came in and noticed him staring at her. She knew it was sometimes difficult for a man to approach a table filled with women, and she had been wracking her brain trying to come up with a way to meet him.  Then she remembered the dreaded raffle tickets in her purse she had been asked to sell.  As she handed him her card, she was grateful for their existence.  She was glad she followed her instinct and asserted herself for a change.  She was even more delighted when he called later that night and offered to buy all her raffle tickets if she agreed to have dinner with him.
