The Party

October 8, 2018

Tracy had been seated by the door of her co-worker Karen’s party for most of the evening.  She viewed Karen as a non-equal who had somehow lucked up on the right crowd, and she had come merely to benefit from her accomplishment.   As she sat there, she made a note of the quality of the men and all their imperfections.

She was there to meet a man, but not just any man.  He would be special, because she was special.  She refused all invitations to dance as she waited to select the one who interested her.  She had no time to waste.

Then she saw him.  He ambled through the door as the rugged type with wide shoulders and deep-set eyes.  He looked aimlessly around the room as if there against his will. His clothes were casual, but obviously expensive.

She watched intently as he circled the room and nodded politely to signs of recognition.  She put on her haughty, but sensuous look to set her apart from the rest. They were all looking at her now, but she only had eyes for him.  She flung her hair to allow the long curls to settle into place.  It was the perfected play to get a man’s attention.

She watched as his movements slowly closed the space between them.  His eyes darted back and forth over the crowd as if he too, was in search.

He was standing now, six feet away and she moved quickly to stand boldly in the path of his vision.  When their eyes met, she recognized the light.  She had seen it too often, when men saw her for the first time.

She held her head high as she pressed through the crowd to stand where he stood.  She smiled as she held out her hand in anticipation of the invitation to dance. She moved to the music as she looked softly into his eyes.

“Hi,” he said, his brow lined with concern.  “Have you seen Karen?”  His voice held the tone of authority, she liked so well.  “I’ve been looking all over and I haven’t been able to find her. I’m her fiancé.”
